CBI Update

February, 2012

Students:
1. New Students – You may remember we added 5 new students in November. At the start of February, we added 3 more. Sophal and Ngeit are both from Chhout’s (current student) village. Somnang is an older married man from a village. He plans to study during the week and travel home on the weekend. See pictures at our blog http://www.randrdolan.blogspot.com/

2. Class for New Students: Just started a class for newer students (7 all together) that Veasna is teaching. It meets during the time Loren is teaching Daniel. The thought was that it’s better for our new students to get some basics. This is Veasna’s first class to teach at CBI.

Classes:

Evangelism Week:
Last week, we went out to 8 different villages. We were able to split the students into two groups. (Glad to have use of the van the Welches helped procure for CBI and the SNACK program.) 7 of those villages don’t have a church meeting there now. Pray that God will bless this effort with new church plants.

CBI UPDATE

December 2011

CBI Update Students:
1.   New Students – After the late October graduation, we added 5 new students. They are Piseth (a brother of Navy’s friend), LiHeang (a friend of Kolab), Hunah (a brother of Phally), Rodthah and Sophy (a friend of Sokhorn). Sophy was homesick and left CBI. The others seem to be doing well. See our blog http://www.randrdolan.blogspot.com/ for pictures.
2.  Other changes:  Rathana left the school in December. We hope he will come back, but don’t know. One of the realties here is that of the students who start the program, only about 2/3 finish. We hope to add two new students, from our waiting list, in January.

Classes:
November 6-13 – Water Festival and Independence Day Holidays
November 14- December 17 – Matthew – Doug Reeves (Sunset)
(Tray Khim Try, June 2010 graduate, translated)
November 14-Dec 2 – Historical Christian Evidences – Rich Dolan
Dec 5-17 – Cross of Christ – Rich Dolan

New Drivers:
Many Khmers don’t have a driver’s license. With the recent graduation, we lost most of the drivers for our weekend preaching trips. Because we want to follow the law and abide by insurance regulations, we have been helping the students get a license after they have been at CBI for a year. 4 students completed Driver’s Ed this month. They had to go every day at 6 a.m. 3 more are taking driver’s ed during the break.

Graduates News:

1.  Sovan (Dec 2010 grad) has had 4-5 baptisms at Saing during the past two weeks.
2.  Sokun (Oct 2011 grad) and Soklee (Dec 2010 grad) have started working together planting a church in Battambong. You may remember that Sokun used to be a pastor in a denominational group.   He reported 11 baptisms from that group in the first week he was back teaching.
3.  Sothea (Jan 2009 grad) has gone off support from the local Phnom Penh congregations. He is set up in pig farming to support himself. As far as I can tell, he is the first self-supporting/local church supported preacher in Cambodia. Please keep him in your prayers as there will be some bumps in this transition time.
4. Sopheap (Oct 2011 grad) and Khim (Jan 2009 grad) have teamed up to do follow up work with the churches at TNT and Sang Sok. The Sang Sok congregation was started this year. The church leaders there are Vannak and Sophy, former part time students at CBI. They currently work full time at the English school there.

Upcoming Classes:
January 2-27 – Philippians and Epistles of John – George Carman
                  – Gospel of Mark – Dennis Welch

USA Trips:
Welches plan to be in the US from the end of March to the first part of May. Dennis will be presenting information about the SNAK program at the Pepperdine Lectures. CBI Update - October 6, 2011

Students: Veasna (June 2009), Chheav (Dec 2009) and Try (June 2010) continue rotate translating at the school when we need it.

1. Student Body - We currently have 21 full time students and 3 part time students. The part time students all have full time jobs, but attend CBI either in the morning or afternoon.
2. Five will graduate at the end of October - Sokun, Penh, Sopheap, Sokna and Vannat. Sokun plans to start a congregation in his home village (see below), Penh and Sopheap want to help the local church while they do vocational training, Sokna will join her husband (Sovan, Dec. 2010 graduate) as he preaches in Saing, Vannat is undecided about what he will do.
3. We have now had 12 students graduate from CBI - Sothea, Khim, Saleem, Veasna, Sophea, Chanty, Chheav, Try, Sovan, Soklee, Pisey and Sereyvuth. Most of these are working in ministry or related areas.

Classes:
July 22nd to August 5th - 2 week break
August 6-12 - Evangelism week; August 14-19 – 7th Habits of Effective Christians (I taught all day); August 22-September 2 – 1 &2 Timothy and Titus - James Glasscock taught for six hours each day. James is a preacher in Troy, New York.  He previously preached in Texas & was a missionary in Russia.  Jimmy was one of our teenagers while we worked in San Angelo, TX.  It was great to have him here.  September 5-23 – Colossians/Philemon - I taught for 3 hours each day.  September 5-23 – Dennis Welch, my co-worker, taught Ephesians in the afternoon. This was his first class to teach in Khmer.

New Students:
In August we added three new students - Srey Mom and two others. The other two decided CBI was not for them and left.  Later, we added Kakada.  We now have 5 students on a waiting list, but don’t have room for them.  (Most of our students live and eat at the school.)  We will add more students at the end of October, when 5 graduate.  In early June, we added 2 new students. Rathana & Phally.

Evangelism Weeks:
August 5th -12th - Keep in mind that the law forbids us to go door to door to teach about Jesus.
Saturday, August 6th-Tuesday, August 9th - Took all the students up to teach in the Battambong area, about 180 miles away (In Cambodia a province & the capital city of a province usually have the same name. Like Oklahoma City and Oklahoma.)  All these places below are within 5 miles of each other.  Channy’s and Soklee’s are less than a mile apart.
Sunday, we taught at Sokun's father's house. (Sokun will graduate in late October. He plans to move back to this village. His father was an elder in the denominational church there but was kicked out of the church in a conflict.) Many of the denominational people came. There must have been 60 adults and 80 or so kids. It was great. I think Sokun can convert that entire group. Sokun played keyboard & was a “pastor” there before he came to CBI.  Most of them have left the denominational group they were with.
Monday, we taught at Soklee's house and Channy's area. At Soklee's house, the boys actually taught in an abandoned New Apostolic Church building. Soklee's father had been one of the elders there. Channy's group did a good job going house to house. Channy hopes to move back there next year. He is married and has a baby (named Rebekah). He will finish up his bachelor’s in law.
Soklee is one of our graduates who took training to repair motos. He works now with Chheav at the church started in the Chaom Choa area of Phnom Penh. Soklee could move back to the Battambong province sometime in the new future. He is one who wanted to start chicken farming on his father’s land. The family will care for the chickens and split the profits with him. I looked over the area and talked with him and his family while we were there. I gave him the $400 for start up costs. We used some of the vocational money given by individuals at Broken Arrow to help with this effort.
Thursday August 11th
a. Throul Pang Petrea – New village we have been teaching at. – Rich and 9 students.
b. TDT (name?) – Veasna & Nutrition Truck have been going to. Dennis and 9 students.
Many were busy in the rice field. Had some talks and studies. One 16 year old girl baptized.
Friday August 12th
a. Chom Ju – Chheav’s – about 8 students and Dennis b. Sang Sok – Vannak and Sophy’s – 14 workers plus Doris, Vannak and Sophy. Broke into 4 or 5 groups to visit and invite people. Started teaching at 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Two who wanted to be baptized (one Veasna and I studied with). Afraid or unable to travel. No place there. One came the next Sunday to PP church and was baptized there.

Next Evangelism Week - November 1-4, 2011 (4 days) Asian Mission Forum:
Ronda and I attended the Asian Mission Forum for the first time, July 30th to August 3rd.   It was in Thailand and was the 50th anniversary.   Over 250 missionaries from all over Asia were there.  It was really good to be able to go.  The North Heights church in Batesville provided most of the funds for this.

Upcoming Classes: October 3-28 – Apologetics (Evidences for believing in God)– Rich Dolan
October 3-28 – Biblical Interpretation – Dennis Welch
November 1-4 – Evangelism Week
November 6-13 – Water Festival and Independence Day Holidays
November 14- December 17 – Matthew – Doug Reeves (Sunset)

Vuth’s village – church still going strong. Have about 30 attend. Vuth moved there in June to begin working with the church fulltime.

a. Sovan is working full time with the church at Saing and doing pig farming as a vocation to help support himself.
b. Soklee took training repairing motos. After that, he moved to help Chheav with the church plant at Choum Chou.

10. Miscellaneous:
a. Tawn’s death was obviously a big blow to the school and to us personally. It has been a blessing though, to see so many people step up to help. And, to help guide our students through a difficult time, helping them learn to depend more on God.
b. Navy, Tawn’s wife, continues on at the school helping to handle the finances and bill paying. She also is a kind of dorm mom.
c. Veasna, Chheav and Try (all CBI graduates) have all helped tremendously in sharing the translating, helping with editing the books, etc.
d. Two of the part time students work together full time with Doris Morrison (another Christian) at a school teaching English. Doris told them to stop studying at CBI for now, in order to work on their English skills for teaching.
e. Julie’s work at the BEST Center (Bible English Study and Training) continues to go well. Sometimes a couple comes and while the husband teaches at CBI, his wife teaches at the BEST Center. The University church of Christ continues to meet at the BEST Center.

We started with our son, Reuben’s, graduation at Pepperdine, travelled to Broken Arrow, then on to Arkansas to see our daughter-in-law and then on to North Heights in Batesville. We did enjoy another week in Broken Arrow, then on to our son’s in Abilene, with a side trip to San Angelo. After that, it was on to Midland to my parents’50th wedding anniversary celebration. It was really good to see so many of you on the way. Thanks for all you do to encourage us and to help the work here.

Thanks go out again to Veasna, Chheav and Try who continue to rotate translating at the school when we need it.

1. Vuth graduated on June 12th - He actually finished his course work at the end of April, but wanted to have the graduation after Ronda and I got back. Vuth immediately moved to his home village, Rang Dak, and has begun his full time work there. Please keep him in your prayers. (Pictures to follow later.)
2. Sovan, December 2010 Graduate and Sokna, November, 2011 graduate – It was my pleasure to join them in marriage on the Saturday after we got back (May 28th). New Students:
In early June, we added 2 new students. Rathana is the older brother of Navy’s friend. Phally is a cousin of Navy. Both have the deer in the headlights look that is common among our new students. But, I think they will do well.

We are currently on a 2 week break, but will resume again with the Evangelism week July 4-8.
July 11-22 – I will teach a Sermon/Lesson Prep Class (Herman Alexander was scheduled to teach, but had to have a surgery instead & could not come.)

(In case you did not know, our daughter, Rebekah and 6 of her college friends, have been here for 5 weeks. They are teaching at the BEST Center about 10 hours per day. It has been a joy to have them living with us.)

Special Request:
Dennis Welch, my co-worker, has been working hard to increase his language skills. He plans to teach Ephesians in Khmer this coming September. Please encourage him and lift him up to the Father in prayer.

Graduates News:

I want to highlight 3 of our graduates who have helped with translating and with the campaign weeks. They all have their own works too, but they are filling in and helping. We would be lost without them.

1. Veasna, June 2009 Graduate, has been a great help in many ways. He translated Dennis' classes on Sacrificial Systems and on the Humanity of Christ in January.  Also he translated the all day class on Leadership for Dale Lundy.  In addition, he has done a lot of the arranging, etc.. for the Campaign weeks. Like all the men, he also helped check the Romans book and study guides we had translated into Khmer.

2. Chheav, December 2009 Graduate, translated Loren’s  class on Romans in February and  the two week, all day every day class on Evangelism for Tim Brumfieild.  Chheav also went out with us every day of the  Campaign.  He also helped check the Romans book and study guides.

3. Try, June 2010 Graduate, translated Dale’s  class on Wisdom Literature in February and will translate the upcoming ACTS class in late April to late May.  Try went  out with us several days of the  Campaign. He plans to study more over the holidays with 5 people at his village who are close to believing. In addition, he studied with and baptized the lady last night (from the BEST Center area.)  Try also helped check the Romans book and study guides.

May the glory be to God who raised up men to fill the gaps.

Hi from us:

Great News!  Attached is a picture of Try (June 2010 CBI graduate) baptizing Vannak, a man who studied at the BEST Center (Bible English Study and Training) yesterday. Ronda's sister, Julie, runs the program at the BEST Center. Try is the local preacher for the church that meets there.

If you would like to read more and see more pictures, please visit Julie's blog at juliebroyles1.blogspot.com.

Graduates News:

1. Sothea - graduated 2 years ago. We are at the end of our 2 year “internship” with him. The problem is he is not ready to stand on his own as self-supporting yet. He has married and has a young son now.  So, the plan is to help him get 3 more pigs (he has two already) and give him 5-6 months’ salary to tide him over until the pigs are producing enough to support him.  At that point, he will be on his own. As far as I know, he will be the first self-supporting preacher here.

2. Sovan – graduated in December.  He moved to Saing, the village where we started a church several months ago. It’s also the home of Try (2010 graduate) and Sokna (Fall 2011 graduate).  He is working hard for the church and in setting up a pig farming business.  He seems to be more assertive in this than Sothea was.  We are all learning from mistakes made.

3. One of our first graduates took a job working with the Nutrition program formerly sponsored by Partners in Progress.  It recently came out that he was skimming money for himself from the sale of bicycles.  He had to be fired from his job.  Please pray for him that God will turn his heart and he will continue to seek God.

Upcoming Graduates:

1. SereyVuth (Vuth) is set to finish his studies in late April.  We will put off his graduation ceremony until June, after we return from the U.S. Vuth plans to study computer repair and technology while working with the church started in his village.  (He is the guy from the article “God and a Bicycle” that I wrote a couple of years ago.) There is a strong core of adults at the church in his village.  Also, we have 4 new students at CBI from his village.

2. Fall 2011 Graduates – You may remember we had several graduate in 2009, then just one each time in December 2009 and June 2010.  Finally we had three more graduate in late 2010.  June will see only Vuth graduate.  But, in late October, five students are set to complete their studies:

Sokna – sister of Try and fiancé of Sovan (cf. above)
Penh – from Battambong, great student
Sokun – from Battambong, former keyboardist in a denominational church
Sopheap – from Battambong, good student
Vannat – from TNT area

***** Peng Soirn would have finished, but he dropped out last month.

Evangelism Week:      January 31-February 4

This was our first effort without Tawn’s help. He was so vital in lining up places, making arrangements, teaching, etc... But, others filled the gap and we had a good week.   Three of the days, we divided into 2 groups and went to two different places.   Veasna, a 2009 graduate, has been doing a great job of locating new places to teach. We were glad to be able to help him in that effort.

Evangelism Classes and Campaign Weeks: - in March and April, Tim Brumfield will be here to teach on Evangelism and help us with a 2 week campaign. We will have to vary the things we do, due to government laws and regulations, but look for this to be very fruitful. Please pray for this effort.

Books:  - We received the Romans commentaries in early February. They have been helpful to our students as they study Romans. Also, we gave 25 copies to Sokhom Hun for use in the Church of Christ school he teaches at. And, we gave 40 copies to the church school in Siem Reap.  These books are in the local Christian book stores. And, they will be offered at ½ price to church leaders at two big denominational conferences this month. The full price is less than $3, trying to keep it affordable for the Khmers.

Thanks for all you do to help the work here.  Please keep us (teachers, students and church) in your prayers, as well as the special needs listed above.

January 19, 2011

Hi, friends:

As you can imagine, it’s been really busy here, but I am passing on some of the good news we have.

1. Schedule:  Obviously, Tawn’s recent death leaves a big hole in our plans.  Here are some of the teachers and translators who have pitched in to help.

   January
Church Growth and Planting – Rich -  in Khmer
Sacrificial Systems and then The Humanity of Jesus. -- Dennis Welch Veasna
Tol, a 2009 graduate is helping to translate for him (filling in for Tawn).
   Febuary/early March:
Romans --Loren Hollingsworth.  Chheav, a Dec 2009 graduate, translates
Wisdom Literature - Dale Lundy (filling in for Tawn).
     Try, June 2010 graduate, translates
Mid March:  One week seminar class
Late March to Late April –
Evangelism Tim Brumfield was already coming to teach and help us
with a campaign.  Not sure yet how the translating will work.
   Late April to Late May
Acts - Bobby Deason (for Tawn).  Not sure yet who will translate
Old Testament History I – Dennis Welch  Not sure yet who will translate
**Dolans to the USA for son’s college graduation and parents’
       50th anniversary celebration

As you can see, we are trying to spread out the translating so that it doesn’t overburden anyone. All these men have their own works to work at also.

2. Student body - our student body continues to be fluid.

 > You may recall we added 4 new students in the early fall. One chose to stop studying,
but the other three (Chhouet, Chourn, Sokhorn) are doing well.
 > We also added Phearea and GumSreav in late fall. GumSreav is doing well, but
Phearea quit the school right after Tawn’s death.
 > The December 2010 graduates were Pisey (first female graduate), Soklee & Sovan
 > This month, we added 4 new students, all from Vuth’s village. They are Sokchea
& Tola (guys.)  Makara and Srey-Touch (girls).  Makara and Srey-Touch were
baptized into Christ on Sunday, January 16th.  See Welches blog for the story
    and pictures:
      http://missioncambodia.wordpress.com/2011/01/18/the-angels-in-heaven-are-rejoicing/
 > Our current student body in class is 17 fulltime students and 4 part time (married
students), with 2 additional students who are doing vocational training.
 > We also have several students who are still in their two year internship/training
with us.  They are all out in various places preaching and teaching.

3.  Paid in Full (Romans) Book and Study Guide Translation

Many of you are involved in helping with this project in many ways.  This project was to be completed by December 15th. Our publisher ran into some snags because they had two edit/checkers who quit.  They asked to postpone the final completion to January 15th. Then, Tawn’s death added a delay on our side. Tawn was the main one to review this work for us (we review it and make changes before it is printed). I have been blessed to have others step in to help.  Veasna, Try & Chheav (all CBI graduates), along with Chann and James (two of Tawn’s brothers) have all taken sections to review. They have done this on their own time and in addition to their own works. We still hope to have the books ready for the Romans class in February.  What a blessing to have so many men qualified and willing to help. May our God be glorified and many be taught through this effort.

Know that you have a part in everything good that happens here.  May our LORD continue to crush Satan through you in everything you do.

Rich

Hi friends:

Just want to catch you up a little on what we're doing here.

1. Evangelism Week was last week.  We made plans to go to 5 different locations, but because it is right smack dab in the middle of rice planting time, two of the places had to cancel.  I never even thought of that.  I'll catch you up later on the other three places.  Our students went to the home of Try and Sokna (where we planted a church), to Sothea's village (where we started a church two years ago) and to Vuth's village (where we started a church a year ago or so).

2. Student body - our student body continues to be fluid.
    a. You may recall that Vadt did not come back from the summer break. He came, with his mother, a week ago to plead with us to take him back into school. We did on a probationary basis.
   b. You know we added Chheut in August. He seems to be doing well.
   c. Because we had room, we have added 3 other new students this week.
      -  Chheun Sem is the brother of a local Christian. He does not know much about the bible.
      -  Sokun Baram is from a local village and was recommended to us.
      -  Sokhat is from Rang Dak (the home of Vuth and Vadt, where we started a congregation) Vadt's mother recommended him to us.

All of these are on a probationary status.  They (and we) will see how they do. Usually,if they are not serious about studying and working, they remove themselves from the school.

3. I am teaching Jeremiah (in Khmer) right now. Dennis is teaching 1 & 2 Thessalonians. With the influx of students, we have 17 full time students and 2 part time students.

Please keep us in your prayers.

Hi Friends:

Just a quick update from us.  Try Tray Kim, known as Try (Prounced "tree")  graduated from CBI Saturday night.  I will attach his picture so that you can see it.  (Also attached is a picture of Try's baptism from 2007).

Try started in November of 2007.  He was the first new student we added on when I first came.  He has proven to be very smart, an excellent student and a very good teacher and speaker. Try plans to begin working full time with the University church here in Phnom Penh. I know he will be a great asset to the church, especially as we try to do a better job of seeking the lost and maturing those who become Christians.

Try was the influence for his sister, Sokna, to begin to study at CBI. She has since become a Christian.  And, just today, Try was able to baptize his mother in Christ.  He said he has been praying for this to happen every day for 3 years!!  What a great weekend for him.

Thanks for your prayers, encouragement and all you do for the work here.  You have a big part in all the fruit that comes from this.

March 23, 2010

Hi, Friends:

I wanted to give a look at a week here in Cambodia. This is a look at March 8-14. This week was different because it was an Evangelism Week where our students go out to villages to teach and preach.

Monday, March 8th

  1. The male students went to Sothea’s village. Sothea is working with a church planted shortly before he graduated last year.  We were able to send his updated computer to him.  Sothea partially supports himself by downloading songs onto to cell phones for people.
  2. This was National Women’s Day, so the church hosted a women’s day meeting at the TNT location.  Our lady students participated in that.
  3. We had language class, just like every day.  We are making some real progress with the language, but it just seems slow.
  4. Loren and Penny Hollingsworth (Ronda’s parents) flew out that evening, after about 6 weeks here.  Loren did his normal great job teaching our students and being an influence on them. They left at 8 p.m. so we had to be out there about 6 p.m.  Later we had planned to take Rob Burnstead to the airport for the midnight flight, but Julie volunteered to take him.

Tuesday, March 9th

  1. The students went to Vuth’s village, where we started a church about a year ago.  The church there is growing and getting stronger.
  2. Because we have so many students now, it’s hard to fit them all in the van (15 passenger) and harder on the host villages to help feed us, etc.  So, during the Evangelism Weeks, we’ve started sending 4 or 5 students each day to help Chheav with the new congregation in Odem.
  3. We picked up Dale Lundy at the airport and got him settled.  Dale started teaching at CBI on March 15th.
  4. Two hours of language class, then prepare to teach Hebrews in Khmer.

Wednesday, March 10th

  1. The students had planned to go to Vannet’s village, but the main lady there got sick and could not help get things ready.  So, we punted and went to Try’s & Sokna’s village for the first time.  There were 20 people in the 15 passenger van.
  2. Hebrews prep in Khmer.

Thursday, March 11th  –

  1. The students had planned to go to Try’s village this day, but switched to Wednesdays, so had no place to go.  They enjoyed the day off.
  2. It was our wedding anniversary.  After language class, we rushed to the airport to pick up Erik Tryggestad, a reporter from the Christian Chronicle.  He was travelling in the area and asked if he could meet some of the people and see some of the works here.
  3. Took Erik to the Small Group meeting for American missionaries.  He met the Welches, Snowbargers, Allisons, Andrew Hays, Sokhom, Julie Broyles and all those teaching for the WEI program at Partners in Progress.  Erik stayed at our house for these few days.

Friday, March 12th –

  1. Took Erik to the PIP house so he could go out with the Nutrition group and could see the WEI teaching in action at the PIP house.
  2. I studied Khmer and Hebrews, then we met the Welches and Dale for lunch.
  3. After language class, we picked Erik up, then stayed with him while he interviewed and visited with Sovan and Navy.
  4. Later that evening, I took Erik to CBI to see it and talk with some of our students.  (And also, to get my van back after the Evangelism Week).

Saturday, March 13th  –

  1. Met Chheav at CBI at 7 a.m. to take a cabinet and marker board to his house.  He is now settled in Odem, the village where he is starting a church.
  2. Rushed to the PIP house for the 9 a.m. baptism of Dara and Srey Lak.  They had asked me to baptize them.  Dara had to go to work after that.  He works from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. as the night guard at the PIP house and then goes to the University during the day.  He also works other jobs to support himself.
  3. Took Erik to the travel agent, to the Tueol Sleng prison camp, to lunch and then to meet Sokhom.
  4. Studied Khmer, Hebrews and went over my sermon.

Sunday, March 14th

  • Had 3 student groups out preaching at area churches.
  • Normal Sunday stuff with the two congregations in town.

February 26, 2010

Hi, Friends:

I wanted to catch you up on the rash of visitors lately with us at CBI.  It’s been great.   Here are some of those:

  1. In late December and early January, there was a group of about 12 people from two churches in Georgia (they help support the Phnom Penh congregation), 3 from South Africa and one man from Thailand.  The group lead a seminar here for the church. One of the ladies taught a ladies’ track at CBI.  I made a couple of late night trips to the airport to help pick up this group. Also, the last night they were here, we hosted the group at our house (so they could shower and eat before they left.) The South Africans and Glom, the Thai man, spent the night with us before flying out the next day.
  2. At the end of January, Sophea, one of our graduates who preaches at the TNT church, was in to visit and meet.  I asked him to tell the students about the realities of his work and what he does each day. He is one of their own who is out doing the work. They asked him several questions.
  3. Early in February, a group of six Americans who are teaching in China made their way here.  They were traveling through and looked us up. They went to chapel with us and I had them tell what they were doing in China and what the church is like there. We invited them to spend the night with us.  I think they really appreciated our house after a night with no hot water in the cheap hotel they were in.
  4. In mid-February, Ben and Natalie Walker stopped in on their way home. They stayed with the Welches, went to church with us at the PIP congregation and Ben taught at chapel. Then, I asked him to talk to our students about his work with Sunset and the Sunset schools in other countries, etc.
  5. A few days later, Bill and Marie-Claire McDonough brought over a group of six or so from France (American Missionaires and some of their students). They came in the evening, sang with our students and talked some about their work.
  6. Right now, Loren and Penny Hollingsworth (Ronda’s parents) are with us as Loren teaches at the school. Because they are here, a Thai preacher, named Oudong, has come to visit them.  He got here Wednesday and leaves Saturday.  He has visited with our students as he has been able.
  7. A group from Stockton, CA has also been here with the Welches. They all worked on the Ship of Life, but also came to church and to chapel at CBI.

Why tell you all this?  When I see the variety of people who have been here and the countries they work in, it is amazing.  As much as possible, we asked them to tell our students about their work and situations.  It has really been a blessing to the students, a reminder that they are not the only ones in the world and a true broadening of their view of the church.  Rejoice with us in this!!!!!

Rich

February 21, 2010

Hi Friends:

Hope you have a great day with the saints there.  We've had a good day here.  Loren, my father in law, preached at the Phnom Penh church. Try, one of our students taught the class.

After church, we met at CBI for 5 baptisms.  Here are the new brothers/sisters in Christ. Please help them by praying for them.

1. Boray - a student at CBI.  He's been here about a month.
2. Noc - a new cook at CBI, having worked there about 2 months.
3. Rexmay - the nephew of Tawn and James.  We stayed at his house last April.
He is here in Phnom Penh    going to college.
4. ???? - the wife of Sophy.  Sophy teaches at a school that teaches English and bible to
younger kids.  Sophy has just started taking classes at CBI part time.
5. Sok-leap - Sophy's sister. She is about 27 years old.

These are new Christians who have been strongly influenced by our students and staff at CBI. Thus, you have a big part in helping them hear about Jesus Christ and believing in Him.

Rich

P.S. Two weeks ago, Channy was asked to go to PreyTaChai to teach some of the people there who the church had been studying with and 5 teenagers were baptized there.

January 13

Hi Friends:,

Hope you are doing well and enjoyed the holidays. We are moving along at CBI. Here is some information on the school and things we would love for you to help us pray about.

1. Cheav, one of our really good students, graduated in December.  He wants to work with a church we started out by the airport.  We need wisdom and prayers for the work there and the details of how it will happen.

2. Neoun, the former Budhist monk, left the school. He was attracted to our former cook and they were inappropriate in their actions.  He is back in his home town. We hope to keep ties with him. He really is a good man with a lot of talent.

3. We've picked up two part-time students. They work 1/2 day each with Doris in a school that teaches English to Khmer children and then attend CBI 1/2 day.  (Wanak comes in the morning and Sophy in the afternoon.)

4. We added a girl from Siem Reap.  Her parents allegedly beat her and forbid her to attend the church there. The men at the school in Siem Reap begged us to take her on.

5. The house Partners in Progress works out of is being sold.  The church that meets there will have to find another place to meet.  We are considering all options at this time.

6. The Ministry of Cults and Religions is not allowing any religious schools to register at this time.  They suggested we register as a church and then we can teach whatever we want there.  We have started the process, but there are many steps to make this happen.

7. Brothers from a church in Singapore are coming next week to talk about other ways they can help the church here.

8.  The Phnom Penh church is moving to a new location.  A church in America is helping to finance a larger building for the church.  Please pray that God will be glorified.

October 19, 2009

Hi, Friends:

I wanted to catch you up on our new school year and other things happening here.

First, we returned 10 students and added 7 new students.  Here is a little info on our current student body:

 1. Chheav - great student with a good h eart, graduates in Dec.
 2. Sovann - good student, been here one year.
 3. Try ("Tree") - good student, graduates in June of 2010.
 4. Pisey (Pe-say) - girl student, been here one year
 5. Neoun - great student, former Budhist monk, about 30 years old, been here one year
 6. Sokna - girl student, Try's sister, started in April
 7. Nika - girl student, started in January, just married Chanty, a recent graduate
 8. SereyVuth or Vuth - great student, been here almost a year.
We started a church in his home village.  It is really doing well.
 9. Soklee or Lee - good student, most improved
10. Sokgoon - new student, former keyboardist in a denominational church
11. Penh - started in April, seems to be doing okay
12. Peap - new student, not a Christian yet
13. Dawlahn - new girl student
14. SereyWaht or Waht - new student, Vuth's brother, not a Christian yet
15. Phen Soan or Soan - just started last week, not a Christian yet
16. Pahla - new student
17. Waynat (second "a" is long) - new student
18. Sopak – started in October

** We also have 3 part time students – they usually can come only in the mornings.

Next, after several months of trying circumstances, including 3 months without working electricity on the second floor, we moved out of our former school location to another place.  The new location is bigger, better and, of course, costs more.  But, with the added number of students, it was the right thing to do. We moved on August 29th.

As for the classes:
1. Tawn taught Historical Christian Evidences from the books that were translated into Khmer.  It has been much easier for the students to have a study guide in their own language.
2. Dennis taught “The Teachings of Jesus” from Matthew. (The students had to memorize the entire Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7.)
3. Greg Fleming (from Midland, Tx) taught Philippians for two weeks and 1st, 2nd & 3rd John for two weeks.
4. In the mornings, Dale Lundy taught “The Life of Christ” from Mark.

It is really nice to have mature Christian men to teach and have an influence on our students.  You may have noticed also, that I've not been teaching so far this fall.  I ne
