Do you need some “quick conversation” starters?  You can find them everywhere!  Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?  This comes from the French word m'aidez -meaning 'help me' -and is pronounced, approximately, 'mayday.'  Why do we have “piggy banks?”  Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on...   DID YOU KNOW?  The longest one-syllable word in the English language is "screeched."   Barbie's measurements if she were life size: 39-23-33.  The name Wendy was made up for the book Peter Pan; there was never a recorded Wendy before!  315 entries in Webster's 1996 Dictionary were misspelled.  And on and on we go!  Fun and interesting facts... but sometimes silly and useless information...

Do you realize that this generation of young people know more facts, more information, and more “stuff” than any generation?  One writer said:  “Our young people have knowledge a mile wide, but an inch deep!”  TONS of information and knowledge... but very little depth.  Young and old alike know just enough about religion, the Bible, and God to be dangerous; however, they do not truly dig deep for answers.  The teens often want the answer, but seldom wish to research FOR the answer.  Mike, “Just tell me the answer!”  Mike, “Can you just tell me quickly?”  It’s the text version – short and easy!

How about you?  Scan the headlines...  read the scrolling news updates...  daily verses to read but seldom study the Bible...  rely on sermons for your “meat” each week...  If we want to be deeply rooted in our faith, we should take these words to heart:  Colossians 2:6,7 – “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him,  rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”  Let’s create some depth!!  Have a great week!
